Laudate_Dominum
If you look at the modern world there are so many uniquely modern quirks that indirectly attach the plan of God. I think the taboo's on alchohol in many cultures are one of them. Generally in the ancient world wine as seen as a great good. When wine is seen as dirty, of sinful, this takes away from fully appreciating the symbolism of the Eucharist, and the significance of wine in the Mass. Another thing is that we're often brainwashed by secular 'enlightenment' ideals to look down upon Monarchy, whereas God is a King, and heaven is a Kingdom. Christ is our King, Mary our Queen, etc.. Just a silly observation. There are countless other examples too. Cheers!
Laudate_Dominum
will it affect my witness? will it cause myself or others to stumble?
I like these two points. This is probably where I might fall short. For example I invited some mormons to my house once, and we had a great four hour discussion (I could swear one of them was seriously interested in converting), but I drank Guinness the whole time. LOL I mainly did it cause I was hoping to start a debate about alchohol, but they never brought it up. Regardless, I probably would have made a better impression with juice or water or something. teehee Cheers!

Didacus
Alcohol... ya.. its fun. heck, it can be an alright BLAST! I've had my share... oh ya, trust me on this will ya? Simply put, some things i have learned, and these lessons wehre hard learned, and cost me plenty. I don't know much in life, methinks most of you already noticed that, but SFD these things I've learned I know are true: 1. drunkeness in itself is not a sin - the INTENT to become drunk to the point of losing one's reason - THAT IS THE SIN. 2. From my father: L'alcohol rend l'homme semblabe a la bete, lui fait perdre sa vie, et parfois lui fait meme perdre son ame. Alcohol renders man similar to the beast, makes him lose his life, and sometimes makes him lose his very soul. 3. Though the state of drunkeness is in itself not a sin, even a small amount of alcohol dims the senses and reason making one more likely to enter sinful situations - and that is the true sinuous danger of alcohol. Is anyone familiar with the old legend of a friar, forced by Satan to choose one of the seven deadly sins as his own? The friar took the one he thought was the least offensive to the Lord, he choose gluttony. In the years thereafter, in his habit of drunkeness, he soon enough took part in all six other deadly sins. Drunkeness is never an acceptable state to willingly place one's self within... sorry to rain on your parades but someone's gotta think of the children! Please, won't someone think of the children! Now with that said, I think its time I have a pint or two of my own while always trying to hold to my reason and senses of course... *cheers*

have you ever tried beer with honeycombs in the morning - good to replace milk Ah yes, with its vitamine packed body and full flavor, beer can replace several condiments including mustard on hot dogs (preferably dipped). I drink alone all the time... but I do try to keep it reasonalbe... I do try... well...I try...sorta try... kinda try?... well I try anyways... Ash Wednesday
I would be really careful about feeling the need to drink on a daily basis, especially in the morning. It could indicate that there is a problem. I dated an alcoholic once and he had the same "oh I can handle it, people are too uptight" attitude. Myself, I have been losing my interest in alcoholic beverages and booze doesn't have the same pleasant allure it once did and for some reason my body doesn't like it beyond two drinks in a sitting. And that's fine with me. On Friday my old man and I were at a casino killing time and had a couple of gin and tonics and they really did nothing for me. It reminded me of the time my alcoholic ex and I would go out and drink a LOT, and how good the drinks tasted and how fun that was at the time, (except for when I'd get sick.) But now I think in hindsight how it was sad and shallow -- there's no way I could go back to that. And when you start to age, you can't consume alcohol like you did in your early twenties, believe me... Went to a family reunion over the weekend (big Catholic families hehe) and I was more interested in the gatorade and orange juice than I was the beer. (Though someone brought some homemade sangria that was mighty tasty.)

I guess the best things in life are often those most prone to misuse, they can easily be turned against man; take sex for example.

One thing that shook me up was, I had a bit too much to drink at this wedding, and Michael O'Brien (author/artist) came up to me and said: "be careful Sean, you know what alchohol can do to our race!". His voice was grave and he is a pretty prophetic guy, so I took it seriously.

jasJis
why is it okay for someone to kill their child at 18 and its not okay to enjoy fine wine every now and then?
Two reasons. 1.) Because 18yo's did not vote when the change went up for vote. 2.) Because statistics showed that alcohol involved deaths decreased in the 18-21 range when the drinking age was raised. Taste for beer and alcohol changes as you get older. Little kids prefer cotton candy to a steak, but most adults would rather have a steak.
Aloysius
bah, that's just because of the puritan culture that's developed here. kids should grow up drinking alchohol... Jesus did, most kids in Europe do... it's unjust to have any drinking age at all- the drinking age itself is the cause of people drinking irresponsibly. but yeah, that's our messed up culture for you... it's because it's built upon the sand of protestantism. taste changes as you get older only because we've unwisely structured our culture that way
