According to Aquinas, drunkenness is even mortal sin!

The sin of drunkenness, as stated in the foregoing Article, consists in the immoderate use and concupiscence of wine. Now this may happen to a man in three ways. First, so that he knows not the drink to be immoderate and intoxicating: and then drunkenness may be without sin, as stated above (1). Secondly, so that he perceives the drink to be immoderate, but without knowing it to be intoxicating, and then drunkenness may involve a venial sin. Thirdly, it may happen that a man is well aware that the drink is immoderate and intoxicating, and yet he would rather be drunk than abstain from drink. Such a man is a drunkard properly speaking, because morals take their species not from things that occur accidentally and beside the intention, but from that which is directly intended. On this way drunkenness is a mortal sin, because then a man willingly and knowingly deprives himself of the use of reason, whereby he performs virtuous deeds and avoids sin, and thus he sins mortally by running the risk of falling into sin. For Ambrose says (De Patriarch. [De Abraham i.]): "We learn that we should shun drunkenness, which prevents us from avoiding grievous sins. For the things we avoid when sober, we unknowingly commit through drunkenness." Therefore drunkenness, properly speaking, is a mortal sin.

Well I drink alone...

Well you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself.

[quote name='corban711' date='Jul 17 2005, 04:48 AM']the first thing i realized when i turned 21 was that there was a darn good reason i didn't drink beer before...it is simply NOT as good as a good soda.  i will take pepsi, wild cherry pepsi, mr. pibb, root beer, coke, dr. pepper, sprite or a few others over any beer, any time, any day of the week.  it just tastes better!!!  i think a lot of younger people try to drink and don't like it till much later when their taste buds end up changing...i on the other hand would rather drink something that tastes good.

i don't drink almost at all for that reason.  i have had about 5 beers or so since i turned 21.  i certainly haven't had more than that although i don't remember the exact number.  i prefer wine although i don't drink that almost at all either.  i like soda, coffee and aquafina.  :)

I agree about the taste of beer. wine or mixed drinks is so much better. :P

Plus, as mentioned before wine is good for your heart. If it was to choose between a beer and a soda or water, I'd gow w/ the water or soda. If it was coffee or beer, no contest--t he cofee wins. :coffee: make that a happy smilie.

I think this business about drinking socially vs. drinking alone is absurd. Drinking alone is "pathological", this is just silly. Tea is often thought of as a social beverage, but I most often drink it alone (and quite frequently I might add), yet no one will call this pathological. I fail to see how there is anything evil about enjoying wine, or beer, or even whiskey if it is not done in the extreme where it becomes unhealthy. But coffee drinking can be done in excess and become unhealthy, as can drinking water. I knew a fellow who had some kind of obsessive compulsive thing that made him drink water constantly and this caused all kinds of weird health problems for him, it actually wrecked his life in many ways.

I agree with what Sean is saying here. To say that drinking alone is a problem just isn't right. I mean some people live by themselves and I'm sure they like a beer or two or some wine every now and then just to relax. Or they could even be having a beer or some wine with dinner. You can't really say that drinking alone is a bad thing. Now if one drinks alone like every night and is showing signs of being an alcoholic then yes I would say that this is cause for concern.

And he is correct about the over drinking of water. A person can overhydrate themselves and it can actually land them in the emergency room. So in all fairness all beverages should be drank in moderation.

[quote name='Laudate_Dominum' date='Jul 17 2005, 05:30 AM']
Also, the idea of something being a social beverage is little more than a cultural norm. There are cultures in which there are no alchoholic taboos and wine is considered a staple of daily life (like water really), and age and the question of drinking alone are not even considerations. Basically I would like to see the reasons behind the statement that drinking alone is pathological. Certainly there are people with whom there might be a pathology which for them involves boozing, but to make such a sweeping statement is out of line.

He's correct here too. There are far too many taboos about alcohol here in this country especially. A country such as France drinks wine like most of us would drink a coke or some tea. It is part of their culture to drink wine with any meal rather it be alone or with company.

God Bless,
Jen
