azaelia Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 I was just watching the Encore coverage of the Closing Mass at World Youth Day, and wondering why they were playing such hokey, feel-good, fluffy music complete with hand motions. I mean seriously...it had the feel of one of our "folk" choirs in some of the more liberal parishes up here in Maine. I didn't expect electric guitars and bongos from a Papal celebrated mass. Maybe it's just me. I wonder what Papa thought about it.
L5 Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 The hand actions are sign language for the hearing-impaired.

Laudate_Dominum Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 Yeah.. the people who organize these things have very poor taste in my opinion. WYD in Canada was incredibly tacky. I imagine Germany will be tacky.. WYD in Rome was better than Canada, but it still had its moments. I'd like to see WYD traditional style.

Fidei Defensor Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 I dont have a problem with the motions/music, only the placement. It shouldnt be part of Mass. It should be done during other activities, but never during Mass.
Noel's angel Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 maybe they will start having party games like 'pass the Eucharist' and 'Pin the Tail on the Pope'

Noel's angel Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 maybe i should have used smilie to illustrate that i was being light-hearted
Fides_et_Ratio Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 I watched a part of the Encore on ETWN and all I could think of were about 3 of Pope Benedict's works I've read... I bet he was sitting there perplexed... remembering what he wrote about the "liturgical innovations" that were surrounding him, yet rejoicing at all the people so interested in the faith... if only they didn't want/need the crappy music and cheap spectacle to make it "more exciting". Imagine... WYD--Gregorian Chant Style. Incense, candles (more than 6000), and NO guitars!!!! ... That'd be the day...

Paladin D Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 Not a big fan of this type of stuff either, but to play devil's advocate: Weren't organs contemporary when they first came about too?
Aloysius Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 not the type of music they played on them. there is a big difference between sacred organ music and secular circus organ music. invent an electric guitar music style that is distinct from the secular stuff, make it sacred, solemn, and reverent,... not just in lyrics... and I'd give you a medal.
