CD2008
No, not those. There were people in the crowd doing the hand motions completely apart from the sign language.
hand-signs at mass are sooooo annoying and, i think kinda disrespectful. And unfortunately, ive seen more and more at different masses -Chris

Paladin D
Not a big fan of this type of stuff either, but to play devil's advocate: Weren't organs contemporary when they first came about too?
Aloysius
not the type of music they played on them. there is a big difference between sacred organ music and secular circus organ music. invent an electric guitar music style that is distinct from the secular stuff, make it sacred, solemn, and reverent,... not just in lyrics... and I'd give you a medal. Cam42
I watched a part of the Encore on ETWN and all I could think of were about 3 of Pope Benedict's works I've read... I bet he was sitting there perplexed... remembering what he wrote about the "liturgical innovations" that were surrounding him, yet rejoicing at all the people so interested in the faith... if only they didn't want/need the crappy music and cheap spectacle to make it "more exciting". Imagine... WYD--Gregorian Chant Style. Incense, candles (more than 6000), and NO guitars!!!! ... That'd be the day... Aloysius
it looked to me like (especially when that electric guitar was playing in the background) he was doing all he could not to cringe on international TV. but I thought he handled it very well. he continued with a very solemn and reverent posture appropriate for the events of the Mass and anyone that was paying attention could see right away from the dichotamy his reverence created to the music that the music was inappropriate for that even. anyone else burst out laughing when they realized the crazy perky song was the Gloria in Latin? it was cool how they kept stopping it and chanting certain phrases though... at least that's a start

son_of_angels
I thought, overall, this WYD was far more Eucharistic, far more prayer-centered, than those before. I mean, think about it, they actually chanted the Tantum Ergo at the Vigil (which I thought was awesome). The only criticism I have is that, coming from a fairly charismatic tradition, the modern songs were sung so rigidly that there really wouldn't have been a difference if they had sung a Mozart setting of the Mass. You don't sing Latin chant as if it were German folk, nor contemporary songs as though they were motets. I think it was the German coming through. dspen2005
the next wyd should be better. archbishop marini (sp??) --the organizer of papal masses -- will be gone... B16 had to keep him because marini was so aware of how wyd goes - imagine if he had release marini before wyd, what kind of mess he would have on his hands..... so just hold on a little bit longer, and 2008 should be better.
