God Conquers
Exactly Our significant problem is in the fact that we have poorly catechized Catholics. Most cradle Catholics have a sixth grade understanding of the Church. The argument about music is simply a sympton to a greater problem. We have a lot of ignorant Catholics.
Amen! I affirm what dUSt is trying to say as well... but with some changes. The sense which you're using the word "modern" automatically means "bad". Keeping in mind what hot stuff has said above, what are the problems of this "modern" music. 1- Protestantism : many of these songs are written by protestants. Therefore many contain theologically improper lyrics. Is this bad? YES! Singing heresies during mass is not good. 2- Music: often this smells of elderberries. Let's face it, the 70's, 80's and early 90's had some bad guitar and focused only on the guitar, it's twangy unoriginal and poppy. Is this bad? Yes... it doesn't engage our minds. Are these things necessarily true all the time? NO. Good Catholic lyrics, and poignant, soul-elevating music can be found. Al has been talking about gregorian chant and other forms which are good because they engage mind, heart and soul, and are designed to do this. For close to 50 years we have had people in the Church who aren't properly caterchized, trained or had the necessary ZEAL to make modern music which appeals these maxims. This is truly sad. HOWEVER, these people now exist. They are among us. They are catechized, they love Christ and they are GIFTED musicians. Let us give them a chance, and not dismiss them out of hand. The Church still places primacy on those things, yet allows new things because, rightly, she is cautious of those things I outlined. Sacred music is a PASTORAL aspect of the Church. It is not doctrine, no more dogma. It changes, but, in Her wisdom, the Church makes sure it is a good thing... let us do the same.
