This school is a joke...

[quote name='p0lar_bear' date='Nov 5 2005, 11:10 AM']Not to discount Bro. Adam's difficulties, but in general I never saw much more trouble with the FUS admin. than you would find in most schools. No matter what school you go to, the classes with the favorite teachers will fill up early. Actually, some of my favorite classes were ones with the less popular teacher. Just because Dr. Minto isn't as well known in the popular world as Dr. Hahn doesn't mean he isn't a fabulous teacher. (Maybe not a fair comparison since if it were permissible to worship a person, Dr. Minto would be the person I chose...). But even so, I first ended up in his class because I didn't want to bother trying to get into a Dr. Hahn class as a freshman. The next year when I had a choice, you couldn't have paid me to take Dr. Hahn over Dr. Minto.

Also, with the exception of the special topics classes, the majority of the theology classes require at least two theology pre-reqs (granted, they don't always keep tabs on whether people have taken them.)
I love my school and I am proud to have graduated from FUS, but if I had one complaint, it would be that I wish it were more academically challenging.

You were also a graduate student at FUS. Micah here at phatmass, as well as most junior/sophmore theology students express the same sentiments as myself. I've got no qualms with Dr. Minto, or any teacher save one. It's also academically challenging enough if you load up with 18-21 credits which most of us do. The problem lies in that we can't even get the classes we need to graduate, there are no spots in any of the sections open. Everything is closed.

If you want to see for yourself, log in as a guest at franciscan.edu. Under 'Catechetics' there are good examples. There is no room in "Saints" and there are 14 people on the wait list and 40 already in the class. This class will never be offered again during the time I intend to be here. So the school is asking me to spend even more money, lose money by not working in my vocation, and postpone my wifes education, not to mention take a chance at trying to get the class I need to graduate next time around. As of now they don't plan on doing anything to fix it that I've heard of.

That's just horrible.

Is there a school you can transfer to?

heavens no, not at this point I've really gotta try to stick it out with the amount of debt I have from paying tuition.

It will all be worthwhile in the end and you will be a stronger person. Just be a witness.

After reading this, I'm really glad I went to my '3rd tier' public school. I never had any problems with registering for classes and even when I needed an override I could get it assuming it was a necessary upper level class for me. And when I graduated I was in the black (I actually got paid to go to school). Ended up with a good job and those in industry recognize my school for putting out good graduates in my field.

Yes, I smell of elderberries.

Did my undergrad there too...granted, that was many years ago by this point...

Part of the problem with the REd program is that it is growing faster than they can keep up with. Up until a couple of years ago, there were only two teachers in the department. There aren't that many people who Prof. Morgan would approve to teach there...even so, they just hired three people to replace her...

I do understand your frustrations. Like I said, I don't want to discount your difficulties at all. But, if this is a major problem, it's a fairly new one. Give them a little time to fix it before discouraging everyone from going there.

Perhaps, when the major problems are fixed, this could be a great school to attend again. The theology department informed the administration they needed three more teachers long ago and administration refused, as well as refusing to restrict non-majors from taking the majors core classes. It is 'new' in a sense, but certianly not unforeseen.
