Welcome back marigold. :)

Posted (edited)

I was just looking at those cornettes again. I wonder how much starch was used in getting them to stand so straight. And I'd have hated to be the sister who had to starch and iron them.

I have been told by multiple Sisters that it took a lot of starch and ironing. They also spent several hours perfecting it. There is also one pin in it, if I remember correctly.

I don't think they have that flap thing. See, I spend enough time on here to be able to distinguish habits but not enough to know what all the parts are called! :P

No, this is definetly a sister from the Monastic Community of Jerusalem, either in Paris or in Strasbourg.

Woah, look at the heels on those shoes!
[/quote]

They are very like the shoes we were given when I entered nursing school, except that ours were white. They were actually quite comfortable, but they clacked on the floors. I trained before sports shoes were invented...

Marigold - the 'flap thing' is a scapular. :smile2:

Oh, and about those cornettes again (and other tottering headgear). When I lived in Wilmette the motherhouse of Sisters of Christian Charity was there. When they closed and sold the motherhouse, many things were for sale including the elaborate "machines" they used to use to starch, stretch, and iron their headgear before they went to a modified habit. It truly looked like Frankenstein's basement! One of the sisters showed me pics that were taken in the 1950's while the entire laundry process was taking place. I can only imagine the chapped and burned hands that were acquired from the startch and mangles. and all for the glory of God and the good of the community.
