:)

I think vee knows a lot about Carmel doesn't she?

This is something like what Carmelites sit on to pray...

or some of the older nuns still use a cushion to sit on but one sits on it sort of sidesaddle and I dont like how it twists my back. Before the cushions, they used to sit back on their heels with their habit rolled up as padding underneath them - this was when the habit was really long and thick and made a great cushion.

When I was on my live-in visit, one of their handmen made me two of these meditation benches, one for the cell and one for the choir. I love them. In WV and Kirk Edge, we used to keep the stool under the choir stall but at Nedlands, there isn't enough room (built differently), so we keep it on top of the choir stall seat. Mine has straight legs, not rocking ones like the pic here, and there is a small piece of flannel or carpet usually glued to the botton so the legs don't scratch the wood floor. Oh yeah, usually they are a dark brown color to match the wood of the choir stalls.

Oh wow, that's interesting. From the few Carmels in the US I've discerned with, I have heard that that just kneel on the floor without anything, or they can sit on the choir bench on the side. A few I know have it where they all kneel for 1/2 hr. and then you can either keep kneeling or sit for the last part (1/2 hr) But in Valparaiso they kneel for the whole time, though they can switch between sitting back on the back of their legs and kneeling straight up. I wonder though if this is a difference between Carmels with the French customs and the Spanish ones ..

Personally though, I love these little prayer stools!! I have one in my room and use it all the time. I think they work well alternating with regular kneeling. This is basically what the Sisters of St. John do .. and I know they have taken a lot from Carmel .. and they are French .. so again, maybe it's the French customs ..

Anyway, I'm rambling .. so since this is a picture thread .. I better post some pictures, lol

The last one is of me and a good friend with whom I went to school with for a year-- she entered after her freshman year.

And yes, they came to my graduation.

Yeah, I think it is a French custom since the English Carmels that I was in were founded by a French Carmelite, and so were the Carmels here in Oz. That first picture is just like the stools we use. I love kneeling up and can stay that way for a long time but can only sit back on my heels for about 10-15 minutes before my legs start to fall asleep. So if we are doing something long, like the Litanies and Commemorations, then I prefer either to kneel up or to use the stool. For an hour's meditation, I usually start kneeling up and then sit on the stool after about ten minutes. I think it is silly to spend the whole hour thinking about one's body, which can happen if it is too uncomfortable. Sure, one can offer it up, but I just think hour is spent more profitably in loving attentiveness rather than in pain. :saint:

It's wonderful they came to your graduation! If I'm not careful, I think I'll have all of the Little Servant SIsters of the Immaculate Conception at mine!

The Little Servant Sisters of the Immaculate Conception

These are the ones in NJ currently

This is from their annual Polish Country Fair. Don't mess with sisters and their 50-50s!

A postulant class in Poland. I think they have three in the US, or three in pre-postulancy. The postulants here are from the Philippines.

So, when using the stool where are your knees? Off to the side and off the ground?

Yes, I agree. I had edited that sentence out of my post before, as I thought maybe it sounded strange. But it's true .. you can get really distracted by your body kneeling straight up for so long. And I can only sit back on my legs for like 5 minutes before it becomes uncomfortable. I can't stand that! For some it doesn't seem to bother them much though I guess. The Missionaries of Charity pray like this a lot ..

I believe the way Mother Agnes explained it to me regarding the sitting back/kneeling at Valparaiso, was more like sitting back on your heels, which I can do for a while without discomfort. The thing that gets uncomfortable here after a while though is your feet :I

Here are some old pictures from a French Carmel/s (okay, I have a b/w theme going here, lol). I'm not sure if they're on prayer stools here or sitting on the back of their heals .. but anyway, they're in that position

In short, the tradition in Carmel, like the MCs, is to kneel in some way on the floor without choir stalls or traditional kneelers :nun1:

I've always wondered what was used by nuns in choir, because I've seen pictures of choir stalls where there is no obvious kneeler in front. I just figured that the nuns knelt on the floor, but I always wondered where they put the books they use in choir.
I believe most Carmels have benches that open like this ..

It's like you're sitting and kneeling at the same time.

Les Recluses Missionaires of Quebec. Not their everyday habit which has a more muted tone. This might be for chapters, solemnities, special something or other.

So the first group in the picture are Missionaries of Charity sisters? Their habits look different somehow. Not just because of the black and white thing.
