First, a comment by Robert Spencer:

"They would go into stores and haggle over prices. They would also demand to see a male salesperson, would not deal with women in stores... some Somali students won't talk to female administrators... Somalis have isolated themselves from the rest of the community." All perfectly normal Islamic behavior, typified by contempt for infidels and women. As for "isolating themselves from the rest of the community," that has to do with Koranic verses such as 3:28: "Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. Whoso doeth that hath no connection with Allah unless (it be) that ye but guard yourselves against them."

CBNNews.com - SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - It has been nearly 20 years since Somalia last had a functioning government. Islamic jihadists now control most of the country-and sharia is the law of the land. [b]Tens of thousands of Somali refugees have resettled in America in recent years[/b] to escape the chaos of their homeland, which is located in the Horn of Africa.

But the transition isn't going smoothly in one small town.[...]

At first glance, Shelbyville is your typical sleepy southern hamlet. It's nestled in middle Tennessee, where the walking horse is king.

There's Main St., the local sheriff, a movie theatre. It's all very "Mayberry," except for one big difference: the recent arrival of hundreds of Somali Muslims.

Small Town Having Difficulties

Shelbyville is about an hour's drive from Nashville, in the heart of the Bible Belt. Like many Americans, the citizens of Shelbyville knew little about Somalia other than the 1993 Black Hawk Down incident, in which 18 U.S. servicemen were killed while battling warlords and Islamic jihadists in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

So when hundreds of Somalis began turning up in the town--many of them dressed in traditional Islamic garb--locals quickly took notice.

"They've had an impact here. Unfortunately, it's not been a good impact," said Brian Mosely, a reporter for the local Shelbyville Times-Gazette.

Mosely won an award from the Associated Press for a series of articles he wrote for the paper about Shelbyville's Somalis.

[b]"I found that there was just an enormous culture clash going on here," he said. "The Somalis were--according to a lot of the people I talked to here--were being very, very rude, inconsiderate, very demanding. They would go into stores and haggle over prices. They would also demand to see a male salesperson, would not deal with women in stores".[/b]

Different People, Different Culture

"Their culture is totally alien to anything the residents are used to," Mosely added.

[b]The problems extend to local schools--where some Somali students won't talk to female administrators. There have also been issues with local law enforcement.[/b]

"I'm not really sure whether that is because of experiences with the police in their country, or whether that's just the way their culture is," said Shelbyville's Police Chief, Austin Swing.

Shelbyville is home to about 17,000 people. The town's Somali population is estimated to be between 400 and 1,000.

This is all part of the current culture of tolerance promoted by liberals and leftists. No explanation of "how we do things in America" is allowed. This would be racist and bigoted. People from other cultures can do whatever they want--no matter how backwards and no matter what a hindrance it is to the healthy growth of a community--while we Americans are expected to be "tolerant" and just put up with it. Sort of a "different strokes for different folks"/"I'm okay, you're okay" mentality.

It is perfectly acceptable for a foreigner to bring their culture into America, to keep tradition alive within the family and to find members within their new [American] community who are similar in belief and practice. However, it is NOT okay to disrespect the new community and expect the families of this community to cater to their every whim. While America is a mix of cultures, we DO have an underlying American culture that everyone shares - I think a lot of people assume otherwise. Our underlying culture is not just freedom and independence but such things as equality, mutual respect REGARDLESS of a difference in opinions, and English as our primary language.

Apparently our country is good enough for these Somali people to USE but not good enough to be respected.

That's nice. I wonder if he has the same feelings for the isolated Jewish Orthodox communities in the US and Israel. When Orthodox Jews throw acid on a girl not meeting their standards of modesty or thank God for not making them a woman is this "normal Jewish, behavior typified by contempt for infidels and women"?

I invite the readers of this thread to try a little thought experiment. Let's say in their daily prayers Muslims said the following.

"Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a Gentile."

"Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a slave."

Blessed are you, Hashem, King of the Universe, for not having made me a woman."

Only let's replace Gentile with unbeliever. What would Robert Spencer or his followers have to say? Would this be continued evidence of latent Islamic misogyny? I mean what sort of backwards faith would have men thanking God they were not made a woman

The horrors of the Holocaust have, thankfully, made anti Semitism politically unacceptable in the United States. But I wonder if anti-Semitism were not a taboo and we applied the methodology of Robert Spencer and his follows to Judaism what sort of image would we have? When if I skimmed the internet for every instance of an Orthodox Jew pelting cars with rocks because the drivers were breaking the Sabbath, what if I isolated every potentially ethnocentrist or misogynistic quote from the Talmud, Torah, and prayers and presented it in a collage of similar correlating event to which applied my own pseudo scholarly interpretation of these quotes and their application to the events? A constant collection of stories of individuals Jews doing or saying things which cast their religion in the worst possible light and doing my best to marry this to the essence of their faith. I wonder what image of Judaism I would be presenting and what individuals would say of my motives. If I isolated every bad thing done by Jews or Israel, compared it with an isolated quote from their sacred text in order to perpetuate my own shallow, simplistic, and intolerant view. If I took the horrors of sabra and shatila and presented them with selections of the Old Testament God commanding his children to slaughter an ethnic group without mercy to secure their land and announced this as merely a continuation of Judaism ruthless policy of securing "their land” no matter what the cost, Judaism being a barbaric tribal religion permitting and even commanding genocide in certain historical contexts in order to secure their goals. In the process, of course, I never or rarely let Jews speak for themselves, or at least when I do go only to the most fanatical and morally deranged individuals I can find. I ask individuals to consider about that for a moment. What if I did it to your faith? What sort of image would individuals draw? What? Christian bludgeoned a homosexual man to death? Well let’s consult Leviticus! Christians oppose allowing interracial marriage? Well no wonder! It’s all right here in their Bible! (of course I exclude the voices of Christians opposing such practices) What sort of image would outsiders, with little knowledge of Christianity or deep contact with Christians draw about your faith? How hurtful would it be to see your faith mutilated on a daily basis? Don’t you already see this to some extent with the corporate media’s apatite for sensationalism? How did it feel when every image or story about a Priest on CNN involved an inappropriate relationship he had with a young man? How did it feel when only the dregs of your religion were featured on the nightly news, the vast majority of Priests who had never participated in such base behavior (and would never want to) never being featured? Their quiet, humble works of piety striving to like by God’s law and make the world a better place excluded due to a preference for the shocking.

Nonsense... as anyone with an education can tell you, our current demographic trend is heavily Hispanic, a good thing, really, since many Latinos are Catholic. Unfortunately Protestant traditions have made heavy inroads in the Hispanic community so the positive impact from a Catholic perspective will be minimized somewhat.

That is probably still bad news to many people who dislike Muslims. (There is a strong overlap between people who hate Muslims of any type and people who hate the Catholic Latinos).

Even with our Hispanic demographic exploding, the overall trend is one of increasing segmentation - there will eventually no longer be a "majority" anything - more like 33% white, 33% Hispanic, 15% black, 5% Asian and so on and so forth... "majority rule" if is based on race or religion will require the formation of coalitions. However in America our tradition is not focused on racial voting blocs (or even religious voting blocs), there have always been blacks who vote Republican and evangelicals who vote Democrat etc.

Islam is not really a "growth sector" so to speak in the U.S., at least not compared to say LDS. That is my impression anyway. We will be "taken over" by the Mormans long before we have any trouble with Muslims! Although I imagine one day we will have to have a Muslim president in the same way we had to have Kennedy to lance the boil of religious prejudice against Catholics.
