There are cultures where a slap isn't considered corporal punishment, but a sign of disrespect. Kind of like sticking your tongue out at someone.

I guess it's just me, but physically punishing a child is something only a parent should be allowed to do. I hardly doubt this kid was acting with complete malice, and even so he's just a kid.

Say what you want but that's not the Priests place to be striking anyone, let alone a minor.

Again that's the parents job not a "relative" strangers. I know I'd probably get my hide tanned by parents if I did that, but I also know they'd be incensed if someone else laid a hand on their child regardless of the situation.

My point exactly. I have no problem saying that if a priest, if a pastor, if anyone put their hands on my kids, God help them.

Theologically speaking, we look at priests as having the same sort of authority over their parishioners as a father's authority over his children.

This reminds me of what I am telling my daughter's teachers tonight when I attend Jr High open house. I'm going to tell them that if they see her looking at, talking to our walking within a 5 ft radius of any boy, to slap her, and send her to the office.

We had that when I was in Junior High. They were called Carmelite nuns.

You know I love you Nihil, but I think you also know how I am going to respond.

It doesn't matter. It's my child. I'll be the one to punish him. No one else. I'm like a mother bear. If I feel you're a threat to my cub, I'll tear you to shreds without a second thought.

I may be psychic, but not *that* psychic. :P

Well I dunno. Seems to me that if you have a kid who's going to pull something like that, you should have him on a darn tight leash, and be slapping a bit of sense into him before the priest even gets his chance.

What cannot be forgotten is that throwing a Host to the floor is an act of Blasphemy and that Blasphemy is worse and more grave than murder.

lol. Hell yes. I'd be up there dragging him by his ear to the back. :P

If I thought my child was going to do something like that, I wouldn't let him go up to begin with. I'd sit his butt down there and keep an eye on him.

But again, that would be me. Certainly I would have him apologize to the Church, the Priest, the Bishop, the Archbishop, and whoever else I could think of.

Of course, no one is denying that the kid was a moron. But I am the parent, I would handle it. No priest would lay a hand on him. I'm sorry, I am not budging on that.

Nor will I budge on the fact that a Priest does at times have the right to discipline his flock.

"Child" and "kid" - the article said "young man". He was probably between 16 and 20.

Okay. Please excuse me.

Is that really necessary?
