These are indeed the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate, but the contemplative branch who wear the giumpe. To join them one must go through formation as a regular (active/contemplative) FI Sister first and then it is discerned later if you're being called to the wholly contemplative life, and you can always be asked to return to active/contemplative life. A little more on them and more pictures here & here. They took over the oldest Carmel in the UK.

The Poor Clares of the Immaculate (of the same FI family) are only in Italy so far. I believe it's 4 monasteries they have there. Their habit is a little different .. the veil is a darker/deeper light blue, the giumpe/wimple goes down farther in front and the mantle is blue also. Beautiful Poor Clares! Would be wonderful if they made a foundation in the US some day.

August 10th and 11th, and postulant entrance is the first Sunday in September if I'm remembering correctly. I still have to email Sr. Lois about going though.

Haha no. Investiture is private, but 1st and final profession and postulant entrance are all open to the public.

oh ok. ive never understood why investiture is private. I want my family to be there when I receive the habit! :nun3: I'll talk to my parents and see if they'll agree to drive me up there ;) *sigh* I wish I could drive. but my parents won't even let me get a permit. :(

I didn't get my liscense until three weeks before my 18th birthday. There's no rush, really, and my mom drove me to a final profession of vows of a local order. Prayers that your parents let you go!

You know, come to think of it... I've never seen men's habits made shorter (like we do with women's). Looking at the picture, you see the sisters' habits are a few inches shorter. I wonder if practicality really has much to do with it at all... in fact, I imagine men doing more crazy things that might be obstructed by a longer habit. Granted, I also can't imagine men wearing a modified habit.

I wonder if, in part, its that a good number of men do not wear the habit all the time, so take it off for occasions when it could get in the way?

At Q the habit tended to get shorter as the sister got older. My first NM, a few months after I entered, reluctantly decided to shorten hers. She was sacristan and so up and down the stairs all the time withthings in her hands and was worried about tripping (she came close a number of times).

That's my guess.

For reasons I do not understand at all, men's communities seem to vary quite a bit in how often they wear their habits/clerical garb. Women's communities tend to be more all-or-nothing. But given that all-or-nothing that seems to be common for women, it makes sense to me that more women's communities have modified theirs more, or a "this pin is our habit" sort of thing, whereas you almost never see that for men's communities -- even those that would be considered roughly equivalently "progressive."

They would probably look like the Heralds of the Gospel or the Knights of the Holy Eucharist.
