Seriously, You Guys...

Strictlyinkblot was flirting with all sorts of brightly colored orders but the Carmelites seem to have sucked her in.

If we pray REALLY HARD she might revert back to the Redemptoristines!

That would be good for variety. Which I'm sure should be top on her list of priorities in discernment.

:)

I second the motion of this thread. We need more Marigold/Orthodox mon and Nunsense/Benedictines

Nunsense, how about warming up your Colwich thread and, Marigold, how about a thread on your Orthodox monastery - no, we don't need to know the name of it - I'm sure folks here would be fascinated to hear about the traditions in Orthodox monastic life (and your personal experiences, for ex. the sweet story you told me about the former tenant of your cell who left little souvenirs in her prayer corner).

I can talk about the Tyburn Benedictine nuns till I go blue in the face. Having been writing to them for 6 years now....is it really that long :hehe2: I know a bit about them these days and they are always happy to ask answer questions. There is also a former Tyburn nun here *pokes her*

Well, last time I posted on that thread, only two people responded. And at the time i could have used a little support for what I was going through at work, so I figured that no one was interested in what I was doing anymore. It's probably a case of too many times  maybe like the boy who cried wolf?

Anyway, no one could post more info about Colwich than Adele (Sr Marie Therese) did during her time with them... her blog is fantastic, even to read again today. And since I haven't even visited them yet, how can I comment on anything about them? My interactions have all be positive so far, and I do have friends who have been there and say nice things about them, but I can only say that I am praying and hoping that this time will be a stayer! :)

I remember when PuellaPaschalis used to try to take over VS with her talk of Benedictines. It never seemed to work. :hehe2:

In all seriousness, I just didn't understand the Benedictine charism like I do now. I appreciate them more than I did before, even if I am not called there. Heck, I have a friend who just became a Benedictine postulant last month. ;)

I have had to ovecome my own negative feelings about Benedictines too. I used to equate all of them with the 'rebel nuns' and wondered why they supported Sr Joan Chittister and and Sandra Schneider who seemed to be defiant of the Vatican.

But then once upon a time I couldn't even say the name 'Jesus without cringing since I had problems with Evangelical Christians and their proseltysing. Now the name of Jesus warms my heart and fills me with love.

In a similar way, I have learned to discern the Benedictines who are 'doing their own thing' and those who have always been faithful and obedient to the magesterium. I was very intolerant, tarring all Benedictines with the same brush...

I think that it has taught me a lesson about not judging communities without first-hand information, or at least very well founded information. I suppose one could say that I am judging Srs Chittister and Schneiders but there I am going on what they have spoken and written, and I disagree with their points of view, so my opinion (although it is my own and therefore subject to dissent from others) is as well founded as I can make it without actually speaking to these sisters.

With Benedictines, they have been around so long and there are so many different communities that they can't be considered as realtively homogenous as Carmelites are. Also, Benedictines are not as strictly enclosed, so they have been influenced by the world they live in - perhaps a bit more than the Carmelites who have been a very insular institution over the years. This is changing now but it is only fairly recently that they have had so much contact with the world.

We might benefit from hearing DigitalDame's input on Benedictines as she has first hand experience as one for many years!

Really? Even ..

a tarantula!

okay, I refrained from posting a picture, but you can look it up :o Speaking of though .. I know a funny story of a Prioress (not Iron Mt./Buffalo nor Valp or Elys.) who sometimes puts a fake, but very real looking, tarantula between the double grilles in their parlor when speaking to guests! :hehe: I think this is very much in the spirit of St. Teresa .. you know the quote  Lord, deliver us from sullen faced saints!

Am I caramelizing this thread enough? :smile4:
