All you need to know about dating at the age of thirteen is this.

Boys smell bad.  And when girls are  not around, they like to fluffy air extraction a lot.
There is more information about boys that will be released to you when you are 30.

I don't think it's appropiate for someone to marry a person who is old enough to be their mother/father.

It certainly is unusual in our culture, but that wouldn't be true of other times and cultures.

It was also done for other reasons in other times.

He was also more her guardian than her husband.

Teresa, physically one can parent a child at 13 or 14. (not that its a good idea obviously)

But does that mean we should limit age ranges in dating to less than 13 or 14 years?

If we do that, we could be missing out on some fabulous people.

It might not work for you, but it may very well work for others.

I don't feel its my place to say that a relationship with years difference is inappropriate. I'll let God decide that.

I'm just saying that I see it as unatural. Take it or leave it. It's just my two cents ;)

Well, your 2 cents and my 2 cents make 4 cents.

Can we get anything for that? :P

Hmm, I put 5 years...but that was before reading the thread (and my personal preference)...but now I'd have to say that it all just depends. My parents are 8 years apart, but I prefer someone closer to my own age. But it all depends on what God's plan is for your life. Who knows. ^_^

I'm surprised no one has happened upon an appropriate response. Marriage should take place within the same generation. A 75 year old should not marry a 17 year old. :)

See...I knew you'd be able to express my thoughts better than I could.

1. They were married.

B. Their age difference was not the exception but the rule for the culture.

Only because they still 'bought' their wives. Older men married younger women because they could afford them.

While I agree about the 17 and 75 year old (because she's a minor), I don't think the generation thing works.

People who are 20-25 years apart are considered of different generations but can very well have a wonderful marriage.

1. Joseph was still given as caretaker in their marriage, unless you have gone Fundamentalist on us and believe that they had children together.

Then an 18 and an 95 year old should be able to marry right? The 18 year old is no longer a minor.

Marriage is always a sensitive subject, but through all the Church has said about the purpose of marriage and child rearing, there must be some sort of limits. I would even say that a 60 year old woman should not marry a 20 year old man as it is most likely she has gone through menopause and would not be able to bear children.
