Emily Rose is also based on a true story...ever heard of Anneleise Michel?

That said, I love that movie.

I also recommend The Song of Bernadette. Awesome, simply awesome.

Yeah, it is a movie for Catholics or anyone to see, because if we do not acknowledge that these things happen, we are in trouble.

A lot of priests on EWTN recommended Excorsism of Emily Rose. I bought the movie, and the lady I live with saw it, and she freaked out, screamed and made me throw it away. She was so mad, that she was about to sprinkle Holy Water on it.

Yet, she has movies about witchcraft?

Excorsisms and demons are serious stuff and people need to know about them.
Pshh, of course I knew it happened in real life! :D I also happen to know that all the differences are superficial. :D Even the levitating happened, as I understand it (though not the spider walk).
I did see Exorcism of Emily Rose... it was ok. I was looking for a bit more of a horror than a court room drama though.
Why did the woman you live with hate it so much? I didn't notice any anti-theist themes in it...

What is the general consensus about Rosemary's Baby anyway? I know we talked about it a while back somewhere else, but I can't recall. I want to see it though.

short films like Fishers of Men? the short films by Family Theater Productions, like the Mysteries of the Rosary (with Fr. Peyton, on EWTN often) are really good.

Romero

The Nativity Story

Exorcism of Emily Rose

Stigmata

The Order

Da Vinci Code (yeah, I know...)

I've been realizing that most entertaining films concerning Catholicism are pretty anti-Catholic, or at least very unorthodox, in rhetoric.

This is in no particular order...
Bella (you guys need to see this one, it is amazing film.)
the Passion of Bernadette (she comes across as historically accurate according to the book I read by Fr. Rene Laurentin)
Changing Lanes This movie won an award by some Catholic association out on the west coast, it deals heavily with the theme of reconciliation

Signs (well it isn't "Catholic" specifically but it has so many Christian themes that you would not expect)

personally i liked "Nuns On the Run", a british comedy starring Eric Idle(monty python) and Robbie Coltrane. basically two small time gangsters trying to get out of crime end up being chased by the mob, and they hide in a Convent(?) posing as Nuns. hilarity ensues.

also, technically "the exorcist" is a catholic film.

I don't know if I know 10 good Catholic movies, but here are some of my favorites:

The Nativity Story (I cry every time Jesus is born!)
Passion of the Christ (I HATE the scourging and crucifixion scenes, but I think that's the point)
Therese (the Leonardo DiFilippis version; yeah, I know it's cheesy, but it's good!)
Padre Pio: Miracle Man (cried several times in this movie)
Mary, Mother of Jesus (Christian Bale played Jesus; TV version, I think)
It's a Wonderful Life (It's not exclusively Catholic, but it's on the Vatican Top 45 list)
Maria Goretti (pretty good, though cheesy at times)

And if I want a really good, scary Catholic movie, I would go for:

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (super SCARY! I got goosebumps the first few times I watched it)

I am a member of Pius Media's rental program (like a Catholic "Netflix"), and I've been renting some movies, but only "Maria Goretti" was good so far. I'm renting these, and waiting on them:

Clare and Francis
Reluctant Saint Francis of Assisi
St. Francis
Karol: The Man Who Became Pope
Jesus of Nazareth (looks good)

BTW, I would NOT recommend these movies (BORING!):

John of the Cross
--(Leonardo DiFilippis played every main male character and his wife played every main female character; it was horrible to see Leo playing two characters in 1 scene! I felt like I was watching a version of Eddie Murphy's "Nutty Professor", LOL)

Teresa of Avila
--(I tried watching episode 1 last night, and I fell asleep. Talk about a good nap movie)

The Passion of the Christ (of course)
The Exorcist
A Man for All Seasons (both versions)
On the Waterfront
El Cid
Braveheart
The Song of Bernadette
Blackrobe
Return to Me (for the chicks)
Gran Turino (good Catholic themes - watch it)

These are in no particular order

The Song of Bernadette

I Confess

The Human Experience

The Keys of the Kingdom (a good priest in everyday life)

High Noon (with Gary Cooper...a man who gives up everything to do what's right even though no one is backing him up)

Batman (seriously, talk about not compromising morals)

St. John Bosco (with Ben Garrazza, Italian)

La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful)

Yours, Mine, and Ours (the older one with Lucille Ball and Fonda)

The Scarlet and the Black

The Passion is in there too, but I can't watch that often.
Definitely not impressed with Bernadtte, Therese, Sister Act.

I Confess
St. John Bosco (the new Italian one)
La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful)
The Scarlet and the Black
Into Great Silence
Babette's Feast

But seriously, there are soooo many great movies out ther that aren't outspokenly Catholic, but they have great questions on morality, suffering and such, for instance Batman 1 and 2, Gladiator, The Lord of the Rings, Cinderella Man, and so on.
