Why do people who do not accept the teaching authority of the Catholic Church call themselves Catholic? I just cannot understand this. There are no social or legal advantages to being Catholic. What does being Catholic even mean if one rejects Church teaching?

The guy on Catholic Answers this afternoon speculated that Mary only had the free choice between non-sins. He called it passe non piccare. (Is that how you spell it?) Click here for an MP3 of the Show. It's about 10 minutes into the show. His statement bothers me. The Immaculate Conception states that she was born w/out Original Sin. I don't see why it would limit her ability to choose to sin. It would seem that she would have been bound to accept the Announcement by Gabriel if that were the case. The passage in Luke implies this difficulty in making the dec…

I'm seeing this discussion over at CAF and since occasionally I think folks here aren't as nutty as folks over there (sometimes) I thought I'd bring this over here. Basically the question is it is sinful to have flatmates or housemates of the opposite sex? I'm not talking about cohabitation of couples, which is a different matter altogether, but platonic friends living together. It's just kind of annoying me because I've lived with male housemates for the past two years and will do next year as well. I don't see anything wrong, it's not a near occasion of sin for anyone and it's not causing scandal - in student populations it's pretty much normal.

I was asked in the Habit thread why I said only CVs specifically share the title of Bride of Christ with the Church. After all, aren't all religious women, all souls (to Christ), all who have achieved a high degree of prayer the Brides of Christ? After working on a response to this, my browser ate it up. So, I'm going to give a considerably shortened, simplified, and different answer. In a footnote, Fr. Thomas Dubay wrote: "Consecrated virginity is the highest form of perfect chastity, but virginity is not the object of the religious vow of chastity. One can take the religious vows even though she may have lost virginity." Elsewhere he writes, "Because the relig…

There is no such thing as "global warming" in the sense that it will send us into an ice age or just keep getting hotter. Why do I say this? Because when we look back in history we see that the earth's temperature cycles vary from 100 to 250 years. Much longer than any of us will live. The earth cools and warms in cycles. We are living in a warming phase and it will start to cool back down within the next ten years, possibly five years. The world is so many millions of years old, one volcano puts out more pollutants than we do in 10,000 years... more CFC's and more "green house gases" than we could ever do. 30 volcanoes erupt every year. So, for humans to do as much…

Can someone explain this to me? I just don't see how guns are an inherent right as human beings. Life, education, proper medical care, these are human rights. How is shaped metal that shoots shaped metal a human right? I don't understand this line of thinking, and I've been led to believe that the only reason people say it is is because 'Murica. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I can't promise you'll change my opinion, but I am genuinely curious as to how this logic works.
