You know, we are having fun with this thread but I've often envisioned something like this.....a religious community that combines all vocations: vowed and lay religious, married couples, consecrated singles. All would like together in community, with the families having their own homes and those who are vowed living together in a convent.

The Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ had this at one time. They had several families living together with the sisters. I don't know why it ended, perhaps there wasn't enough interest.
But wouldn't it be wonderful to raise children in such an atmosphere of love and holiness? Little Portion Monastery in Arkansas also has such a community, I'm not sure how large it is. But John Michael Talbot and his wife formed the community many years ago.

oh by the way......

I think that the grounds of the PPC monastery should definitely be large enough to have a 2K running/walking path included. Time should be allowed for those of us who are runners to practice this form of devotion to God and HIs creation.

also, Sr. Infirmarian is well versed in the treatment of skin splints for those among us who get to eager in their running.

Sr. Mary Benedicta, etc. :biker:

Fine then I'll feed them, the boys need food.

You're right, young men need food--lots of food. John the Baptist was much older when he went into the desert. Having watched an older brother go through his teenage and college years, having eaten in a college cafeteria, and now watching my nephew as he has suddenly shot up to six feet--teenage boys and young men eat a lot. (So much, it makes me jealous, because it doesn't make them fat. It helps them "fill out" but they don't (usually) get fat.)

So, even if Triddy is strict with her seminarians, Hilde and I will have pity and sneak out at night and feed them. We'll ask Sister Cook to make extra, so they get good, wholesome food.

However, if they cheat at cards, I may get stern. I don't like cheating at cards, particularly since, in the end, the winner of a card game is not important and has no impact on the world. I can understand a man who steals food to keep his family from starving. There is no reason to cheat at cards. And, in the end, a victory won by cheating gives no self-satisfaction. Plus, they are seminarians. They can't be angels, but it's reasonable to expect at least a LITTLE better behavior from them.

I agree. And, since we haven't picked out a location for the monastery, we (and our donor) will make sure that its grounds are "just the right size."

And, a Sister Infirmarian who knows how to deal with shin splints is exactly what we need. That is another reason why we also need a pool, to provide a form of exercise for those who need to take a break, or at least cut back their running, that does not require them to put extra weight on their legs.

welcome!!!

I am Sister Lucy of the Infant Lord (or by a more fitting title; Sister Potty Mouth of the Music and Internet Addictions)

I would be the one in a tree with the SanDamiano cross somewhere on my habit.

Feel free to choose any name, job, or spirituality you want, although I do believe librarian and infirmiarian are already taken. ;)

Well hello Sister Lucy! My, I admire your SanDamiano cross!

I am Sister Veronica of the Divine Face of Jesus. I am of the Carmelite spirituality, although possess a strong tie to the Franciscans. Or so I wish. I can usually be found overwatering the tomatoes in the garden, and trying desperately to learn how to grow roses in the tropics and ever constantly failing. I would probably also be feeding Sister Lucy's addiction to music and internet.

Welcome! We always need people who work in the garden. I hope LOTS of others join you. And, both the Carmelite and Franciscan Sisters will be very welcome to have you join us! (I think we definitely will have to allow the wearing of more than one "spirituality" pin.) Music is welcome--I love music. However, the purpose of the monastery is quiet, so the joy of music should be expressed in ways, times, and places that other Sisters, who are seeking silence, do not have their silence broken. (Also, if I am woken up from one of my many naps, I may lapse into secular language.)

For those with Carmelite tendencies, Sister Lucy has made plans for a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Angels. All images, statues, and perhaps, (if the librarian is cranky from being woken from her nap), all writings on and of St. Therese will be restricted to this chapel and its immediate exterior. Within the chapel, and the immediate exterior--go for it. However, the chapel will have thick stone walls and heavy doors, and will be placed in a secluded location, so that others, who are not quite as fond of St. Therese and her ecstacies, do not storm the chapel wearing unholy faces. Each time this rule is broken, said Sister will find that her cell contains a new picture of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Ignatius of Loyola, to name two possibilities, that will be glued to the wall of her cell so that it cannot be removed. If necessary, these pictures will cover all the walls and ceilings of the cells of Sisters who cannot restrict their ecstacies for the sake of the quiet and contemplation of the monastery. St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross are not subject to these restrictions, but are on probation.

The council is going to have to come up with rules for the Internet. It will not be restricted completely, because Sister Librarian (me) LOVES the Internet and rejects any teaching that the Internet is the spawn of Satan. I'm not worried about porn, I'm worried about all the time it wastes. So, we'll see. BTW--Electronic games, etc are verboten as time wasters.

I want a beautiful, simple retreat house attached to the convent. And access to the convent chapel for Adoration all day and all night. I'd like to retreat there now. :)

Absolutely. If you would like to be in charge of it, you are welcome. There are others in the community who make Rosaries as well, so perhaps our community will become known for its wide selection of Rosaries and chaplets.

Also, one of my arcane skills I have developed is to become an expert on sources for beautiful but inexpensive beads for Rosaries. I can't make Rosaries, but I can help keep up our supply of beads and findings. I also have become an expert on sources for centers, crucifixes, and medals, especially for obscure saints etc. If you want to know where to find a medal of Our Lady of the Railroad, I'm your woman. Strangely, it is easier to find medals of Our Lady of the Railroad than Our Lady of Peace, the name of our monastery. We may have to have special medals made for us. (I finally found a medal for Our Lady of Peace--it was the last one the Internet store had, but they may order more.)

I would love to be in charge of the gift shop, provided that no one else minds. The Lord has blessed me with the ability to write very well. I can also write poems and other things to go on greeting cards/postcards or other things.

she_who_is_not has already expressed interest in a guesthouse, so perhaps the two of you can work together. It probably will not be attached to the monastery however, because some of our Sisters will wish to be cloistered, so it will be just outside the cloister walls.

Definitely perpetual adoration in the Chapel (which will be open to the public, but with a Sister's chapel attached). We have yet to come up with a floor plan for the chapel. All we know is that it will have a Viking Boat hanging from the ceiling, on request of Hilde, because in Norway (where she lives), churches have Viking Boats hanging from the ceiling. It will be a beautiful Viking Boat, however, and will make our chapel totally unique (at least, outside Norway).

Here is the link to the post from she_who_is_not. We will need more than one Sister for the retreat house anyway, and you can contribute ideas of your own. Keep reading past her post, because I had some additional ideas.
