Seven77 Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011
I think its pretty normal for guys who don't have sex to masturbate. Mabey not moral but normal. We can pretend like its not normal but that is not reality.
It is not at all normal. It's unnatural. We can pretend it is not. Sorry for sounding harsh dude. I do understand however, that it is a common problem.

Not being male, I don't know how hard it is for males in this area, but I would hate to think that every male who is not sexually active believes it is natural to do this, especially as the Church considers it a mortal sin.

Guest Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 But I hate porn and don't think people should view it. I don't and I never will.

Just saying, but maybe there should be another thread about this on the Deabte Table, but I'm not going to start it. I just wonder about what you aer saying, that's all. Not that it doesn't happen, but whether it should be considered 'natural' or not.

KenW Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he says to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other is good - he is gratitude, joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy ,generosity, truth, compassion and faith. This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather which wolf would win. The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
Papist, may I shamelessly plagiarize you on my Facebook page?

Well, first of all, as a human being, I live good and evil all the time, within me."
Sorry, buddy, but "it's not a mortal sin anyway" is just a cheap excuse to stay caught in the cycle. Addiction isn't a green light for sin. "Expecting a young male ... not to masturbate is a lot to ask ..." Again, sorry, but if you're serious about your faith, that is exactly what you're being asked to do. Yes, it's really tough. Yes, you're going to hate it. But that's what God is asking of you -- to man up, have courage, and stop. It's not an issue of "which is more bad, with porn or not." It's about respecting yourself, God, and every woman that ever trusts you. When you choose this stuff, it basically says that your desires are more important than what anyone else needs from you. I know you probably think it's impossible not to do it. But you can. I swear.

That its not a mortal sin. So its not about just not doing it. You should try your best but just because you might still do it doesn't mean you don't love God or your not following Him or whatever else. Ya know people joke on here all the time about getting drunk which is fine with me. But that's a grave sin too. So while masturbation is horrible and all that I do think one should be carefull when pointing fingers and laying out a huge guilt trip on someone. There is a lot worse things a man cpuld be doing then masturbating. Like having sex with different women and having kids all that. This thread is about porn anyways so sorry about derailing it again. MissyP89 Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 (Mods, please feel free to split this if you see a need. Thanks. ) OK, here's the thing. I'm not trying to lay a guilt trip on you ... we're all screwed up in one way or another. I'm not saying you don't love God. But I am saying that you're making a ton of excuses and it's all bull. I'm only being tough on you because I was the exact same way not too long ago. I don't want to see anyone be like that, especially a man who's trying to live for Him. All I'm saying is that your actions and intentions speak much louder than words. Be honest with yourself. God bless you. I'm stepping away for the night.

There may be circumstances (i.e. addition to it) that mitigates it from potentially being mortal, but honestly I think the priest was incorrect per se. You can ask in Q&A for a better and more precise answer than this. But even the catechism of the Church addresses the seriousness of the matter.
Indeed it does: 2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved." To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability. Let's leave the duties of the clergy to the clergy.
