I think we should post pictures of women in immodest swimwear, so we can disapprove of them.

But only attractive women, so that we're not unfairly biased against the outfit.

You don't have to. I'm going to recruit Hasan. He lives at a college, and I bet they've used the money from the government to purchase swimming areas.

(snip)

I highly recommend watching this video: http://www.youtube.c...eChurchMilitant "The Naked Truth about Modesty." It was very eye opening for me. I wished that someone had told me those things earlier in my life. There are also books on the subject such as "Dressing with Dignity" which includes many good resources and documents to show what the Church does teach about this subject.

(snip)
Thanks for that post, PapistWyf! I was thinking of that very video when reading this thread. Gabrielle from TheChurchMilitant, GRfilmschool (http://www.youtube.c...lmschool/videos), GabiAfterHours (http://www.youtube.c...terHours/videos), and kolbe1019 (http://www.youtube.c...olbe1019/videos) does a great job of bringing up the issues that people don't often talk about and telling it like it is (although I'm not sure why he has so many channels :P).

I really want to have my sisters to watch this video on modesty, but I'm not sure how they or my mom would react to it, as they don't really seem to share the same views.. And it seems a bit awkward when coming from me.. I guess I'm just waiting for the right opportunity. :idontknow:

It's a good question... are you sure you are ready for the answer?

I myself have experienced a conversion on the meaning of modesty over the past several months - year... scales have fallen off my eyes... we in our culture have too many double standards when it comes to modesty. We think that somehow we can turn off our eyes and minds like a light switch when we are at the beach or playing sports. The same standards of modesty should be applied in every situation that we live. How covered do you think you ought to be when you go to the store or to school or to church? (And even then, one's standards might not even be truly modest...) But let's begin there by saying that you should be just as covered up at the pool or the beach.

I have come to understand that anything that reveals your body's form/ precise outline, whether or not it is "covered" by a layer of fabric, is immodest. One should not be able to discern every bump and curve and crevice of your body. (this applies the same to both men and women) For women, we can and should look feminine (i.e. it's okay to see that we have a waist that is narrower than our hips and bust and that we have hips and busts, but no one should be able to see the outline of your rear end, lines of cleavage, muscle definition (or lack thereof!), etc. (let alone panty lines, bra straps, midriffs and more!)

This is a super condensed argument for modesty.... it is worth learning more and really asking the Holy Spirit to help open your heart and your mind.... but one fact that I found very compelling was to learn that men, when they see someone wearing skin tight, form revealing clothing will essentially picture that body naked in their minds... if it's black pantaloons, for example, then it's just like they see your skin, but painted black (or denim or whatever.) This is not meant to accuse men of any wrongdoing, I heard the testimonial from many males themselves, and as I understand, this is just simply the way their brains are wired. Also, if they see lines of cleavage, they will fill in the rest of the image in their mind. Do you want to be the object of such mental images? Even if they were not lustful? even if they were only anatomical? ...And as for women, speaking for myself, but I know that I in my mind can be very critical, judgemental, jealous, etc. So I do not want to lead other women to sin in this way either. I find that dressing in a *truly* modest way does a great deal in battling the sin of vanity (being concerned with what other people think of you).

I highly recommend watching this video: http://www.youtube.c...eChurchMilitant "The Naked Truth about Modesty." I myself am currently pondering and searching for what I will be wearing beachside and poolside during our vacations this summer. Basically, I know what I need to get, it's basically a matter of shelling out the money or trying to sew something myself.

HTH.

I'm glad you have found a niche where you are comfortable, but your understanding except in its very general sense applies to you. I don't think what I where shopping is what I am ever gonna wear swimming. I don't think we need to look like our clothing is painted one either, there is such a thing as a happy medium.

No, this "fact" you have learned is incorrect. If you know any men who do this (for instance, picturing women in black pantaloons as displaying a layer of black-painted skin) then they have a serious problem with lust, and if they do it routinely then they probably need intervention from a mental health professional. I PROMISE you that God did not "wire their brains" to do anything like that.

I read your post to my husband and he is very concerned about what you are taking away from these modesty resources. The resources are good but so often the young women they are directed at aren't given appropriate guidance.

Please understand that mature Christian men who have a healthy integrated sexuality are not going to be like the men you described in your post. This is particularly important when courting or dating, do NOT get seriously involved with a young man who has this problem until he has taken steps to resolve it.

Here's an interesting and very exhaustive modesty survey of (mostly) young men about women if yall haven't already seen it. It's more broad than just swimwear but swimwear is included. Be sure to read the Overview and stuff if you do look at it, as some of the survey results/questions might appear a bit confusing.

So modesty is whatever wearer wants it to be, i.e. Relative. I see now
I wouldn't say that! Remember to look at the poll results of the statements, not the statements themselves. For example, the poll for the statement "Jeans are generally immodest, even if they aren't tight" shows that most men strongly disagreed.
