Hair Trauma

Apart from that it doesn't decompose... at least, not in less than 30 years or so :)

Maybe it's time that you acknowledged that your hair is gorgeous. It's not vanity to think that someone else might be happy with it!

Oh, Lauren. . .this was from an earlier post, but I didn't get a response. . .wasn't sure if you saw it. . .when your mom was growing out her grey. ..any tips for how she did it, to avoid the whole grey on top, color on bottom look? Or other suggestions?
[/quote]

To tell you the truth, she didn't do anything to the roots while the grey was growing out. She kept saying during that whole year (and probably the year I was at OLAM, too) that she couldn't wait for the grey to be grown out more. She now has grey hair and her natural color, but the roots are the same color as the ends now... to me it really looks beautiful! She started growing it out in reparation for the sins of the world, and it was very difficult for her (she has a LOT of VERY beautiful hair... everyone compliments her hair). It was hard for her but I think she's really glad she did it because now she doesn't have to worry about having it dyed anymore. With so much hair, it was a big hassle for her to dye it (and when she had it dyed at home, it was yours truly doing it! Sometimes highlighting it too!) lol, we had fun, but we're both glad she let it "go grey" ^_^

My opinion of my hair is not the point here :) Anyway, I did some googling and a whole bunch of sites told me that human hair is good to put on the composting heap. So it takes 30 years? Nothing in the big scheme of things

Love and prayers,

PP

PS This is all assuming the monastery even has a composting heap, of course.

I like what St. Therese did with hers  They arranged it in a frame with flowers. At OLAM, the hair that gets cut is placed on a silver tray and put on the altar for the day of the sisters Investment- to symbolize that it is a gift to Our Lord.

I've heard not-so-good things about Locks of Love - although not being in the USA this is all quite second-hand information of course. It was something about them not being completely honest about how they use the hair donated to them, not being ethical in their practices, and not administering their finances in a way one might expect with a charity.

But take this with a pinch of salt! If anyone's interested I'll try and dig up the source where I read all this.

Love and prayers,

PP

Well then...forget that. I'll keep my hair until I find something better to do with it.

^ The blonde in the picture is the back of my head! :ninja:
I've done Locks for Love... I cut 10" off about 5 years ago. My roommate did it. (It was the first time my hair was above my shoulders in over 12 years or something.) I'm sure there were some split ends in there. But I did receive a nice "thank you" in the mail from Locks for Love a few weeks after I mailed the hair in.

I'm thinking about doing it again, but I need to have a 2" trim. And then I'd still have about 4" to go.... so I'm a little up in the (h)air about it.

I think something similar happens with the CFRs. I know each girl has her own silver bowl for her hair which is kept by the community.

Seriously! :o We were looking at a book during my visit in NY and saw the picture of it. They way it's edited in this book though is just perfect for seeing it really well. It's her hair against a white background and the page is quite large. It's like large children's book size so it's not quite as tiny as it is on here.

If you get time to spend in the library at the novitiate, you might look at it. I think it's sitting on the little table in front of the cases. (Sr. Miriam could point it out for you if she's around.)
