I'll find it interesting when his or her home is destroyed by a hurricane and insurance doesn't cover living expenses while he or she still has to cover mortgage payments. People can be so sanctimonious when their situation is fine. I used to be that person - I made responsible decisions, worked hard, earned scholarships, saved my money, and thought I was somehow responsible for my situation. I've worked my butt off for scholarships and assistantships. I finally had to take out loans, but I'm all too accutely aware I'm one unforseen circumstance away from financial ruin. Personally, here's what I think: If people want to waste their time "occupying" wall street, then so be it. I've got more...interesting (for lack of a better word) things to do... So people are against the abuse of Capitalism, razzle dazzle. But is "occupying" wall street going to help solve the problem? What will solve the problem? Good, solid, and honest political and economic leaders. A leader such as that would be worth much more and do much more good than any number of "occupiers" could do in any number of "occupations". These festival goers have off the wall demands like free college education, erasing all debt around the world, and other such non-sense. We resume normal programming... Please provide some examples of toxic lending practices. And, what about predatory borrowing? I mean people who borrower from banks and through technicalities, fraud, responsibility shirking, etc., walk away from their debt obligations? When does the protest against those people begin? They traded debt in a response to government pressure to lend more, specifically to riskier borrowers. Mortgage backed securities were the implementation of one man's theory about diversifying risk. Wall St. saw a demand in one hand (the feds) and a possible solution in the other hand (risk diversification). They put the two together. When main st. began foreclosing for a variety of reasons, Wall St. began to suffer. Enough suffering lead to 2008. There are three major players: 1. The Feds 2. Main St. 3. Wall St. If you want to know who to blame, imagine the collapse as an exploded bomb. Who provided the gun powder, wick, etc. to make the bomb? Who made the bomb? Who lit the bomb? The Feds setup the circumstances for a bomb to be created and provided supplies. Wall St. rolled the wick. Main St. lit the bomb. So, the list you see above is the blame order for the collapse. Wall St. is the last to blame. It was not because of deregulation that we had a collapse; it was because of too much regulation. The Feds spent too much time trying to manipulate markets in order to meet a political goal. (Political goal probably a little harsh since I believe some had good intentions, to see more people invest in their lives via home ownership.) The Fed tried manipulating financial institutions like chess pieces and got everyone burnt. Large corporations, like small and medium corporations and even people, do commit illegal acts. And when caught, they do pay. "exploiting overseas workers with dangerous conditions and low wages" Like Apple, the favored brand of Occupy Wallstockers? "avoiding taxes" Like Obama's GE?
