OK, I'll try to get the count for last week and the next stop on our walk up later today.

If anyone wants to add more numbers for me to count, get 'em in early....but the numbers are looking GOOOOD!

(I'll try to get 'em up, but I can't promise it... I've been feeling kinda lousy last few days....)

Do we have a standard conversion for time to approximate miles we are using if we're not able to track exactly how far we've gone? I walked a LOT this past weekend and know the approximate time spent walking, but I'd like to at least get somewhat close with my estimate of distance.

Good question, xTriciaxLynnx!!!!!

Well... a lot of that depends on how fast you walk.   :)

If you aren't using a pedometer, start with 5-10 miles for just breathing and moving around your house each week. ;)   that would be your normal every-day walking around the house stuff.... a pedometer calculates that AND the dedicated 'aerobic' mileage separately.)

Then add on what you think you spent in walking (which is your 'aerobic' mileage).  If you want to be really simple, jsut figure 15 mins = one mile.  BUT.... that is walking pretty quickly -- 4 miles an hour.  If you are a moderately paced walker, 3 miles per hour... Somewhat slower, 2 miles per hour.  If you really don't know, time yourself for 15 minutes and use google map to trace your route and give you your mileage.   :)

Also, this is what Sparkpeople says are some of the equivalents....

15 minutes per mile = 4 miles/hour

20 mins per mile = 3 miles/hour

30 mins/mile = 2 miles/hour

low impact Aerobics, Walk Away the Pounds videos 30 mins = 5 miles/hour

Hiking, climbing hills, carrying 10-20 lb load = 5 miles/hour

If someone is swimming or biking or doing something else, let me know so I can give you the equivalent mileage. :)

Hello, Everyone!   We have the Stats for our Travelers this week.

We have the following Travelers who have registered:

Week ending 7/12/2014:

AnneLine ........................  13.59

BrandelynMarie .............. 14.00

CarterMia .......................   32.00

CrossCut ........................   12.00

Maximillion ...................... 10.00

SpemInAlium ..................  17.00

TheresaThoma ...............  20.00

Tigger60 .........................  14.01

TOTAL TRAVELERS:   8

TOTAL MILES:   132.6

Almost everyone's numbers are up from last week... Excellent!!!

I've given all who haven't said they are using pedometers an extra 10 miles... becauase that makes your numbers get in the same ballpark with the rest of us.   That is the equivalent of 'just breathing' that I've discovered shows up on my pedometer when I am sick.  who would have figured????

If you ARE using a pedometer, please let us know so we will not give you that extra credit.  Generally if you give me numbers that aren't round numbers, i'ts a pretty clear sign you are using a pedometer!    :)

Hope to see you posting soon, xTriciaxLynnx!

As with all these maps, be sure to select the little walking man.  You may want to switch between looking at the 'terrain' and the 'google earth' option to get the best view of this part of the journey.

We are now heading into the desert areas in the southeastern part of California. This area includes some of California's most desolate and rugged lands... and some gorgeous oasis.  It also has some very upscale rest areas for us to enjoy after we travel through the desert.

Coachella Valley

Before we head into the desert proper, if you enjoy California grapefruit... the Coachella Valley is famous for them!

Palm Desert

We will spend a short while in Palm Desert, California.  It is the geographic center of the Coachella Valley, a fast-growing region of southern California that comprises nine cities.  Palm Desert has evolved into a vibrant small city that today is the educational, retail and cultural hub of the Valley. This is a VERY rich enclave in a pretty tough environment.

Enjoy the lushness... and the upscale stores... the civic art... Don't miss St. Francis at 2.45 (what is HE doing HERE????)

We will be heading into the mountains you see VERY soon now... so be prepared.... things are going to change drastically now!   This is a very tough environment and the area is pretty desolate, but it has its own beauty.

Now....  about those mountains that are in front of us... ????   Yes, the terrain really DOES move that dramatically from the flat oasis areas into the rugged mountains.....

This is on the home page of the City of Desert Hot Springs.  Yes, we are heading into those mountains soon....

OPTIONAL SIDE TRIP - DEATH VALLEY

About 200 miles south of Joshua Tree (but in the same area of desert) is "Death Valley" and this video explains why this area is called "the land that God had foresaken":

"In the middle of California's Mojave Desert, there's more than 3-million square miles of desert sand, barren landscape, and scorched earth, known as Death Valley. But despite its extremes there is life there."

I cannot imagine what it would be like to live in this place... but people and animals do....

In another day or two, watch for our next stop -- Twentynine Palms.

You can add 8 miles for me!

Are people counting totals for the day? I should really buy a pedometer.

Just before we get to Twentynine Palms, we will enjoy a trip to a very unique place...

Joshua Tree National Park

http://www.nps.gov/jotr/index.htm

You can explore this park courtesy of the US National Parks Service website:

http://www.nps.gov/jotr/index.htm

Here is some of what the National Park Service has to say about Joshua Tree National Park:

A Desert Park

Viewed from the road, this desert park only hints at its vitality. Closer examination reveals a fascinating variety of plants and animals that make their home in this land shaped by strong winds, unpredictable torrents of rain, and climatic extremes. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the attraction of this place. Come see for yourself!

Coping With the Weather

Temperature changes of 40 degrees within 24 hours are common. Bring a variety of clothes that you can layer on and off as conditions change.

Although rain is relatively rare in the desert, when it does come it can really pour down. Even when it isn't raining where you are, rain in the mountains can run off so fast as to cause flash floods. Stay alert.

Joshua Tree is famous for its very unique Joshua Trees!  Here is a PDF of a children's book about one named Lily!

And one of the residents has come out to greet you!

Enjoy this drive through Joshua Tree right now!

"We took a drive out to this park in early July 2011. We mostly stayed on the northern end of the park. It was 110+ outside. This place is HUGE and so beautiful. It was 100% picture perfect. I wish I took more time filming & got some in HD. We plan on driving back out there in the winter to film this again & hopefully we will have snow on the ground. Joshua tree national park is breath taking to say the least with it trees, rocks & wild life it is a place everyone should go to at least once in their life time."

Sounds windy!

Twentynine Palms

Twentynine Palms is all about the Marines.  They have a huge base up here... and the town that also serves as a resting place for visitors to the base and travelers.

Basically, this is just the place for us to spend the night... before we continue on our journey....

Here is a link to the Marine Corps Air Ground Center website... lots of interesting information.

http://www.29palms.marines.mil/

And they have a Tourism office....

http://visit29.org/About-29-Palms-California.6.0.html

So, rest up, for next week we'll be heading out of California to Arizona!

Next stop:  Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge, AZ

I'd appreciate a bit of feedback, if there is interest... you like what I am putting up about the places we are seeing?

I can't promise TOO much excitement while we are in the desert, but are there particular things you would enjoy reading about????

You like nature?

Cities? People?

Odd stuff?

Like the videos?

Pictures????

Quirky????

Here is an extra glass of ice water for your thoughts....

considering it is about 115 degrees F. out there, you probably would enjoy this where we are traveling....
