Well, here he is. I just spent a bit of the afternoon messing around with my new painting toys. It's very nice to have a proper watercolor palette now, it makes it far easier to control what colors I'm putting down when I'm mixing things up. It also allows me to test the transparency of my washes, because it has a clear tray inside, which is very cool. I also got sable brushes. I couldn't believe the difference they made. Comparing sable to synthetic is like comparing night and day.

Making this I learned a few more things about watercolor I didn't know before: Crayons do not make a good watercolor resist at all. Sable brushes are way better than synthetic brushes. Backgrounds shouldn't be an afterthought. Mixing white with the other colors also increases the opacity of the paint. And a few other little things too. I love learning. :)

Well, work didn't stand still during Christmas. Oh boy. This is going to be insane very shortly. I don't think I'll be able to go with my family up north for New Years, it's just not going to happen.

I think I'm going to need it. These guys are planning to blow my entire hourly budget for what's left of Dec and all of Jan in the course of a week or two. :wall:

So today I wrote to the International Marian Research Institute of Dayton Ohio to inquire about these images:

I wanted to know more about their origins, when they were made, and whether they can put me into contact with the sisters at the Carmel of the Holy Trinity in Tokyo. I want to request higher resolution scans, and also permission to do a "transformative use" work, AKA, make them into engravings. I know I'm not legally required to do so, but since I was able to track the source of the images this far I wanted to at least ask.

So, I got a response from those guys in Dayton Ohio, and I don't think they know much about that artwork. They simply suggested I write to the sisters directly. That'd be grand, except I don't know any Japanese. Huzzah!

Now what?

Online translator? I don't know if you had already seen this, but you said you didn't know much about their address formatting; theirs seems to be the first address here: http://www.ocd.pcn.net/ocd/n3_japan.htm

I think that is the old website for the Discalced Carmelites -- this is the more recent one that has the addresses for the Carmelite nuns in Asia.   I'd be willing to bet someone in the Tokyo Carmel speaks English... .at least I'd send your retter or email in English and see what happens.... interesting problem!

I think the one you want is...

Chôfu-Shi Tokyo

Alternatively, this is the link from the same big site for the Father General's delegate for the Carmelite FATHERS... again, I am pretty sure someone would speak English... and I think it includes an email link.... and someone there would know who yo should contact...
