Old means there won't be gratuitous sexual tension between the pretty boy Doctor and the lady companions. Moffat wanted to do old before he saw Matt Smith's audition. While I love both 9 and 11 (and 9 is definitely my favorite Doctor), it's quite clear that 10 is objectively the better of the three. Why? Because he was an avid fan from childhood.
