I first started reading it 5 years ago and made it half way through and then lost heart... Tolstoy was taking the characters in an entirely wrong direction... ... now I have read past that point and I see he did a 180 degree plot switcheroo and is headed back in the direction I wanted all along! Oooo that trickster!

But since this is my mom's book and I'm not taking it back to school with me, I'm mentioning it now: The Toon Treasury of Classic Children's Comics, selected and edited by Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly (approx. 330 pages) ETA: It's old stuff: Little Lulu, Little Archie, Melvin Monster, Donald Duck, Denis the Menace, Captain Marvel, The Three Mousekeeters, Supermouse, and more. I'm still chunking through the books I had, but I did finish another one that was almost done and looking for a moment of fame! So short a day : the life of Mother Marie-Rose, foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, 1811-1849 276 pages! it was a good book. I had started it on a retreat, and was happy to find a used copy. I was educated by the Sisters of the Holy Names, and I like their foundress a lot. It gave me a good perspective of life in their community, and the challenges of founding a community in a mission territory in the early to mid 1800s. Surprisingly modern in terms of their experiences as they started out. It also helped me to see how different they were from our time period... much more of an emphasis on rigid spirituality and physical mortification. BUT it was her way to holiness. She does inspire me, but I think she would probably view God and her own body differently in the early 2000s. :)

I'll update as I finish each book, but I think with the Feb. 2 cut-off and only 4-5 chapters a day, it probably won't be very many. Though I suppose if I were to rearrange the order in which I read the books, I could get quite a few done... I have also been reading some Church documents. I think we had established that those will count, though, had we not?
AnneLine Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 Well, I think you should plan your Bible Reading accordingly, Tricia!!!! ;) hehehe And include page numbers unless you want me to just use the ones in my own bible...depending on foot and margin notes and typesize, your mileage may differ CONSIDERABLY. ;) Yes, each document of the Documents of Vatican II counts as one book -- and some are shorter and some are longer. I'll even throw in book status for each section of the Catechism (I'm nicer toward the start of the new year... don't ask for this in December! :paperbag: ) I wish everyone a wonderful year of renewed reading pleasure! We're in process of selecting potential books, so check it out. I'm thinking maybe we should give a bonus to those who participate in that book - maybe triple pages or something (because after all, you'll be doing some discussing, too!) Thoughts? If you have a favorite YA book, be sure it gets on the list of possibles.... and vote for your favorite(s)... we'll be doing selection around Jan 6th!

Maggyie Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I'm done!!! I finished all 1,382 pages. It was rather anti-climactic. In the epilogue it shows who married who and what children they had. Then the Count drones on about his theories of historical analysis for a bit. The end. I'm so glad I finished it though. Hurrah!
